Teach People, Not Poses

In the world of yoga, it's easy to become fixated on achieving the perfect pose. Instagram feeds are filled with impressive asanas and seemingly flawless practices where everyone is bending like pretzels and balancing on one finger. Whilst doing my teacher training I came across a quote that although simple is also pretty damn profound: 'teach people, not poses'.
Leaning into the Journey
Every person comes with their unique story. They bring their own set of experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Rather than focusing solely on the aesthetics of a pose, try turning the focus inwards and meet the pose where you are. How does this pose feel today?
Emphasising the Process
Yoga isn’t about bending yourself into a pretzel or nailing a perfect headstand on your first try (although props to you if you can!). It’s about the ups, downs, wobbles, and breakthroughs that happen along the way. Embrace the journey, the process of growth, and the transformation that happens along the way. This mindset helps cultivate patience, self-compassion, and a deeper connection with your body (both on and off the mat).
The True Essence of Yoga
Ultimately, ‘teaching people not poses’ captures the essence of yoga. It's about union—connecting the mind, body, and spirit. It's about understanding that yoga is a personal journey, and each person's path is unique. By honouring this individuality, we can create a more compassionate and empowering practice for everyone.
In my classes, you won't just learn how to perform a pose; you'll learn how to listen to your body, respect your limits, and celebrate your progress. Because at the end of the day, yoga is not just about what you do, but how you feel and who you become.
